Why My Birds are Hungry

You turned my bird feeder upside down and are shaking out the birdseed?!

Ha, I've caught you this time!

Oh, don't give me that story about being framed!

  1. The more posts that I read of yours about squirrels, I am glad we don't have any. I remember being young and feeding them peanuts, but not the bad things like knocking over bird feeders!

    1. There are places without squirrels?! I had no idea.

Though, while my squirrels are often nuisances, I must admit that this squirrel was indeed framed. While my squirrels often manage to get around the squirrel baffle and eat a lot of my birdseed, it was probably a raccoon that was strong enough to knock the bird feeder over. (Yep, I have lots of little nuisances in my garden! I guess I did want to garden for wildlife.. )

  3. Have you tried a squirrel baffle from Wild Birds Unlimited? I've found they work pretty well, though there is one squirrel who has learned to drop down from the telephone wire onto the feeder. We call him Commando Squirrel.

    1. Ha, that reminds me of my Mission Impossible Squirrels! I'll have to try a baffle from there - mine are from Lowes and are not the best (as you can probably tell!)

  4. That shot is priceless. It perfectly captures why I stopped feeding the birds. But you gotta love the guy's determination.

    1. I loved the shot - though to be fair, it was probably a raccoon that turned the bird feeder upside down. I love watching the birds in winter and would miss that, so for now I am putting up with all the other antics.

  5. Not fair! (Why am I sticking up for the squirrel?!) Seriously, though, squirrels can sure wreak havoc with feeders. But we haven't had issues since we erected our squirrel baffle. They sit in the tree and look longingly at the bird feeders. And then they scurry around under the feeders and scavenge the seed leavings that fall on the ground. Great photos!

    1. I definitely need a better squirrel baffle. They've figured out how to get past mine, with some aerobatic maneuvers!

  6. This is SO CUTE even if the squirrel is wrongly accused.

  7. I have a black squirrel that climbs the Shepard's hook too. They really can be clever in how they dump the food too.

    1. I've never seen a black squirrel before. Are they bigger?

  8. Indie,
This one is way too clever. He might be to be moved and put on the witness protection program.

    1. An excellent suggestion! Maybe he could serve as witness to my raccoon bandits, who actually turned over the bird feeder!

  9. Hmm, I am smiling, they are cute, but boy do the squirrels make a lot of mess and damage! At the moment it seems like crocus bulbs are top of the list for the squirrels in my garden. They dig up huge areas and throw the soil everywhere, just to get to the crocus bulbs. The funny thing is, they don’t seem to eat them, they just dig them up and scatter them around. I keep putting them back again every day, as the poor crocuses started sprouting long time ago! Not sure how long they will tolerate this game :-)

    1. Oh how frustrating! That's weird they don't even eat them. Maybe they think they're nuts? I don't have too much trouble with the squirrels and my bulbs - they are too busy trying to get the bird feeder! Oftentimes too, I spray the area I've planted with a rotten egg/pepper spray that keeps them away for awhile.
