The Earliest Daffodils

Well, it seems like I've away from the Red House Garden forever, between traveling for the holidays and then with everyone in the family falling sick with various ailments, including yours truly.  But I'm finally back and in the garden, planting those poor, dejected, last bags of bulbs that have been waiting to be planted!

And, of course, as I've been planting those last bags of daffodil bulbs, guess what's been blooming?

Oh, crap.
I think this is my garden telling me that I am officially late with my bulb planting!

Though, to be fair, these aren't just any daffodils in bloom.  These are Narcissus 'Rijnveld's Early Sensation', the earliest of the daffodils.  Blooming in January or February down here in the South, and in March further up North, they will keep blooming even if temperatures drop into the teens.  Last year, mine bloomed even through a snowstorm.

Thankfully, it is not snowing here now, but is instead ridiculously warm.  Perfect weather, in fact, for planting some more bulbs...

I'm almost done, really!

For what's currently blooming in other gardens around the world,

  1. Fantastic, you beat me! I have daffodil buds, but no flowers yet, and now the weather here has turned completely and we are having a cold snap that will last a while. No snow in London though! Your daffodils look lovely, I have put them on my (very long) plant wish list :-)

    1. I hope your daffodils still bloom through the cold snap! We're supposed to get some colder weather here soon as well, so we'll see what all my other dafs that are coming up do.

  2. Gorgeous! So funny that you're still planting bulbs and now some are blooming. You're right--I won't see those beauties until March. So I'll have to make a lot of visits to your blog to cheer me up!

    1. If I move up North (which is likely), I plan to grow masses of these, so that I can get some blooms just as early as I can. March is a long time to wait!

  3. I'm sorry that you and your family have been ill. That is a lovely daffodil and flowers just when you need to see the colour the most. My early bulbs haven't even poked their noses through the grass yet - clearly they don't share our definition of early. It did make me smile that you are planting bulbs while looking at (what will be) the fruits of your labour!

    1. It is pretty funny. I do hope that I am planting these bulbs in time for at least a late spring bloom!

  4. Glad to hear you are better as is your family...your daffs are saying don't worry, plant us whenever and we will still be happy and bloom...oh to see daffs in January is bliss!!

    1. I am definitely enjoying it! In the past, they've come up in February for me. It must be the warm weather we've had this year!

  5. I have some daffodils poking up too, but none in bloom yet. We're supposed to have a rough February, so I hope they can handle the cold that surely is coming soon.

    1. February usually brings our worst weather as well. I have a lot of other daffodils coming up as well, so we'll see what happens! I think this happens just about every year!

  6. Late planted bulbs just extend the season.

    1. Exactly! All the more reason to keep planting!

  7. So glad to see that I'm not the only one planting late bulbs - mine were on sale at a bargain price and I couldn't resist. It will be months before I see a daffodil here in Scotland.

    1. That must be some cold planting there! I hope you've had some warm spells to plant those bulbs!

    1. After living with such a long growing season, I would be so impatient waiting for spring there!

  9. Beautiful. I hope you have enough cold weather ahead to chill the daffs you just planted.

    1. Me too! At least January and February are (usually) our coldest months. We'll see what happens!

  10. Lucky lucky lucky…can you see my eyes turning green with envy?? These are beautiful little daffs and I'm so glad you posted these photos. January is the time to dream of spring up here in "the North"…..

    1. We don't get the pretty snow here, but I would be so impatient for spring living up there!

  11. You are ahead of me, Indie. My earliest daffodils are Jack Snipe and Jetfire, and they have just started to poke through. As for the soon-to-be-planted bulbs, well, if they don't do anything this year, there is always next year.

    1. I just planted some Jetfire this past fall/winter. They haven't made an appearance yet, but just planted bulbs always take their time. It will be interesting to see how they compare time wise with the Rijnveld's next year!

  12. I can't believe your daffodils are already blooming! We have had a fairly cold winter this year (colder than the last two), and I'm wishing for some signs of spring. I've planted bulbs late before - glad to see I'm not the only one that has done that!

  13. Oh mannnnnn......I've been doing a great big gardeners whine here...are those for real?

Wow, on the coast we used to have some bloom in early February...but March? Up here, not going to happen, lol.

  14. Those Daffs are very early. Just poking through the earth here. I have to say, Jack Snipe and Jetfire are my two favourites, big enough to give a good show, yet sturdy in the harsh weather.

  15. My daffodils are just beginning to push up, and a very few are blooming. The bright yellow is a welcome sign!

  16. I love daffodils. They are very beautiful. In Poland, bloom in May.
I look forward to spring and the daffodils.
    I send greetings.
