A Berry Strange Mystery

I've previously posted about my Winterberry Holly bushes that I have on either side of my front porch.  One of the reasons I love them is that they loose their leaves in fall, leaving their branches covered only in bright red berries.  It is a spectacular sight.

The display of berries lingers into winter, often past Christmas, until the local birds discover them and feast.

My bushes are usually completely loaded with berries.  This year was no exception - until a couple of weeks ago when my Holly branches started looking much barer than normal...

For some mysterious reason, many of the berries had gone missing!

I'm not quite sure where all of my berries could have gone.

Any ideas?

    1. :) I'm glad you were able to leave a comment this time, Denise! Sometimes I think blogger tends to be a little buggy.

  2. That last pick is hilarious! Caught red-handed! ;-)

PS - The berries on my beautyberry (Callicarpa americana) bush typically last until December, but this year the bush is already cleaned out. I can blame a chipmunk though, because I saw multiple mockingbirds competing for berries last month.

    1. Very cool! I have an Asian beautyberry, and I never see birds on it, but somehow the berries always disappear on that bush too!

    1. Yeah I don't think he could have fit any more berries in there without some falling out!

  7. Cheeky little devils! Same thing is happening with my once-loaded cotoneaster next to the steps. I'll have to check my winterberries, but even those never make it to Christmas as the bluebirds and waxwings swoop down and they are gone within days. At least I still have the hollies. ;)

    1. I should check my cotoneaster in the backyard. I wouldn't be surprised if those are gone too!

  8. Oh I love this and I have one here that is collecting sunflower seeds...so darn cute..Thank you for your comment on my blog. Yes, there has always been evil but it seems to be getting really loud again. My 93 year old MIL escaped Nazi Germany with her siblings. Her parents didn't and were killed. She watches TV with great sadness....Michelle

    1. So sad. It is sad that there is still so much prejudice and violence in the world.

  10. That last photo is hilarious. I have the same issue with the Cranberrybush Viburnum berries. Very frustrating.

    1. My poor Winterberry bushes are almost completely bare now. He was rather fun to watch at least. I do hope this doesn't become a yearly occurrence!

  11. Your photographs are a delight. We have winterberries and squirrels, but the squirrels in our garden must be satisfied (so far) with the Chinese chestnut crop. Lucky me.
