In the Jungle

I feel like I've hardly been in the garden the past few weeks between traveling, visitors, and the weather.  June ended on a heat wave, with temperatures soaring up to 97°F (36°C) into early July.

While that might be normal temperatures down South, my body has now acclimated to the Northern winters and cooler temps.  Thankfully the highs have since dropped back down into the 80's, which is more normal for summer here.

Daylily - possibly 'Frosted Vintage Ruffles'
Hopefully now that it is cooled down and I am done with my travels, I can finally give my neglected garden some attention.  It is turning into a overgrown jungle.

the front jungle, ah, I mean garden
My parents recently visited, and my dad joked that he should have brought a machete to help me get through my garden.

I have my work cut out for me!  At least as I start the weeding and pruning, there are so many pretty blooms in the garden to enjoy.

Clockwise from top: Gardenia 'Frostproof', coneflowers, Calendula 'Snow Princess', Daylily 'Stephanie Returns', Lonicera sempervirens 'Tangerine Princess', bee on Salvia
The garden is also full of birds, butterflies, bees, and an unfortunate number of baby bunnies.

a perching Hummingbird - arguably cuter than the bunnies?
I've started seeing Monarch butterflies almost every day here - a positive sign.

Well, wish me luck!  It's back to the weeding and pruning... and staking.

Happy gardening!

    1. Thank you! Unfortunately as you get closer, many of those plants fall in the 'weed' category. I'm hoping that my garden plants will one day spread enough so that I don't have to do so much weeding!

  2. Hi Indie, Your front garden has a wonderful design -- I'm sure once you do a bit of weeding and cutting back it will look totally under control again. Glad to hear you're enjoying some cooler temperatures, as it's much nicer to work outside in them. Good luck with the work! Best, -Beth

    1. Thank you! The parts where I've weeded look much better afterwards. Slowly but surely!

  4. We are woefully behind with weeding too. It's been so hot for so long. Finally it's cooled of, so we need to get out there. Your garden doesn't look to bad in your pictures, so hopefully it won't be too big of a job!

  5. You are wayyy too hard on yourself! It looks great. I prefer a healthy, lush, natural garden to a perfectly manicured one. Hummingbirds are much, much cuter than rabbits. Rabbits are evil. ;-)

    1. That's true - I don't really care for many perfectly manicured gardens, as they can be oftentimes boring. A lush garden being overrun by crabgrass is not the greatest look either though, ha!

  6. I sure love your jungle, it is gorgeous! And what a nice picture of your hummingbird. I have the hardest time photographing them, they are too fast for me :)

    1. Thank you! I spend way too much time trying to photograph them, as it is so hard. I have to wait until they get somewhere close enough for me to take a photo out of my window. They are so pretty though.

  7. Always enjoy your bird photos. Loved your coneflowers. I am able to grow them from seed with ease. You do have your work cut out for you pruning at the greenhouse. I don't mind the bunnies I see because we are in the monsoon years so I haven't been growing much in the way of veggies.

    1. Normally the bunnies stick with the lawn weeds, but they have started nibbling on some of my nice plants too. I have way too many in my yard this year.

  9. Your garden looks great despite the heat. Love the bee pics. Here things are getting very dry though temps have been mild.

    1. That is too bad. We are finally coming out of a drought, thankfully. I've been getting worried about some of the trees.

  10. Your garden may be wild and a bit overgrown, but it still looks lovely! I love the images of the hummingbird and of the coneflowers on each side of the walkway.

  11. It all looks beautiful. I can't see any weeds. No need for a machete ;-)
