10 Reasons You Should NOT grow a Vegetable Garden

1. To build your garden you will need to acquire good dirt, which might lead to the horrifying realization that good dirt includes such things as cow 'manure' and worm 'castings' - which are really just different names for animal 'poop'.

2. You will find that your children will want to 'help' plant and water the garden.  This might will lead to dirty and unkempt children.

3. Your children might want to go outside more often to 'help' with the gardening and picking of vegetables.  You may have to go outside as well in order to supervise, which might will lead to a shattered image of the gardening experience as being quiet and tranquil.

4. Each morning, you will have to go out in the fresh air and water said garden, though thankfully only in good weather.

5. Your kids will enjoy fresh vegetables so much that after summer they won't want to eat the ones you bought in plastic packaging at the store anymore.

6. Your success in growing vegetables might lead to boasting, and we all know that pride goes before a fall, usually over that hose you left laying next to the garden.

7. You might end up with so many vegetables that you will experience the feeling of being overwhelmed, which could possibly lead to depression.

8. In order to deal with the abundance of vegetables, you might have to go to the effort of talking nice with the neighbors in order to pressure them into taking these unwanted vegetables.

9. If the abundance of vegetables is too great, you might even have to take the time to learn new skills such as freezing or even canning.  This is a gateway to hippie-like tendencies.

10. Growing fresh vegetables will lead to the eating of more fresh vegetables, which can lower consumption of other delicious foods such as baked goods, desserts, and bacon.  Ah, thank goodness my veggie garden is now pretty much over for the season, and the holidays are on their way...

What, here in North Carolina you can grow a cool-season vegetable garden too?  Nnooooooo!!

  2. haha - Yes, I do often feel quite "hippie-ish"! And I'm starting my fall vegetable garden today! Although I've been trying to squeeze in a few desserts! ;O I love how your children are learning so much and helping you in the garden. I wish I would have been into gardening when my children were young.

    1. I must admit, I usually do manage to fit in some dessert despite all the veggie eating! :) It is great to garden with the kids. I remember my Mom gardening some and having a little garden all my own when I was a kid. They are good memories!

  3. What a fun post. I especially like the comment about only going out in the garden in good weather. We gardeners certainly do put up with all sorts of things in the garden that we would ever allow in our 'real' lives, don't we?

    1. I actually managed to plant my fall garden over Labor Day weekend. My strategy is to mention it to the kids - then they bug me until they get to to plant 'their' seeds!

  5. I was hoping for a few more tomatoes so I could try canning, but I'm glad gardening season is over for now. I was surprised how much water it took, but set up a drip system with a timer so I got to forego the early morning watering. :) Cute post!

    1. Nice! I still hand water, sadly. I've only canned peppers. Those jalapenos just won't stop, though I wish they would! Of course, only my husband can eat them, since he has already burnt off all of his taste buds..

  6. Funny! Isn't it great when kids get excited about growing their own food! My kids will run to the garden as soon as they get home from school to harvest veggies! We planted our cool season veggies and the spinach and lettuce is well on its way!

    1. Thank you! That is one of the good things about the warm weather. It's too hot to go outside during the summer, but the growing season is extended so much into the fall.

  13. Somehow I missed this post, Indie; glad I found it. You made me chuckle, especially the part about giving away an abundance of vegetables--one year when my zucchini crop was exceptional, everyone who came to my door had to take home a couple of zucchini:)

Yes, you might have dirty children, but oh, the memories you are making with them!
