Seedlings-in-waiting

Back in February and March, when snow was still coming down and piling up on the ground, this gardener was eager to do something for the garden, so I started planting packets of seeds indoors in my guest room conservatory.

Sorry Mom and Dad, you don't mind sharing your room with the plants when you come to stay, right?
Well, now I have seedlings.. and lots of them!

I have seedlings in my guest room conservatory..

seedlings on my deck..

tomatillo seedlings
seedlings in my garage..

I think I might have gone a little overboard.

Some of these seedlings are destined to a local garden club's plant sale and some to friends and family.  We'll see if I can find room in my yard for all that will still be left!

Tomato seedling - one of about 492.  Okay, maybe not that many, but there's a lot!
Of course, for the past few weeks, we have all been waiting for that magic Last Frost Date.  It is now within sight, and it is so warm out, that I could probably start planting now..

Isn't this one of the best uses for the red Solo cup?
...except all of my spare time is being used to work on building our awesome new Veggie Garden!
Stay tuned...
And happy planting!

p.s. Anyone want a tomato seedling?  I have a few to spare...

  1. Ha! That's so funny. I did the same thing this year. When winter dragged on, I started planting seeds, and planting more seeds. I ended up selling some and building a whole new vegetable garden for them to grow in. I love growing baby plants. It's so rewarding. Looks like you enjoy it too.

    1. It is so much fun, and, as you said, the dragging on of winter just contributed to the overly large amount of seeds planted :) Enjoy your new veggie garden!

  2. You have a lot of planting to do, but the rewards should be great! The economics of seed-starting cannot be beat, and the results will be a lush, abundantly wonderful garden. I need to set up my own conservatory!

    1. I am excited to start harvesting veggies! That is, if I can ever get my veggie garden done... The conservatory is highly useful, and having the plants in the guest room helps keeps my cats out of the seedlings!

  3. Holy Harvard! You could have warned me to sit down before you showed that photo of all the seedlings in the garage! I'm sure glad some of those are going to a garden club plant sale because you would be truly overwhelmed trying to plant all of that. My poor pal in Colorado is dealing with SNOW this week!

    1. Ha, I very well might be groaning trying to plant all of these (I'm groaning right now just watering all of these!) Oh man, I don't even know what I'd do if it snowed again now. Those poor people!

  4. Nice. The seedlings are looking ready to grow outdoors soon.

    1. I'm excited to start planting! And Mr. Red House is excited to get all these seedlings out of the garage and off the deck :)

  5. Wow, good for you! I have a few flats, but I don't use warming lights so they're taking a long time to get going. I've always purchased plants from the garden centers in the past, but for various reasons, I tried autumn seeding and a few early spring flats this year. It is fun!

    1. I have some containers of winter sown seeds, and they're coming up. They're still pretty small, though - I think I had them in too shady of a location so they took quite a while to come up. It's such a nice carefree way to grow seeds, though!

  6. My spare bedroom is where I started seeds this year too. I went a little overboard as well, but it feels good to have such great results my first try. Our frost date was April 15, so I have moved the flats to the front porch. I'm slowly planting my seedlings, and giving them away. It's been a lot of fun, and I can't wait for everything to start to bloom!

    1. It's so great to see all those seeds sprouting and getting big! Enjoy!

  7. Wow! I'm impressed by all your success with your seedlings. My efforts didn't turned out nearly as well this year, and I'm not sure why. I'm hope you're not like me--I can't bear to throw out a seedling, which is why the past couple of years we've been inundated with grape tomatoes:)

    1. Ha, I have way too many tomatoes to really plant everything, so I hope I can give a lot away! I, too, hate throwing away a perfectly good plant!

  8. I'm jealous of your grow lights! Your guest room/conservatory is my fantasy - tons of things started from seed, and way too many seedlings to know what to do with! Sounds like you'll be eating a lot of salad this summer.

    1. Ah, thanks! It was surprisingly easy to put together - a baker's rack and then several of those cheap shop lights hung with s-hooks. Seed starting is addictive, and each year my grow station keeps getting bigger!

  9. Amazing...I cut back this year and was going to plant this week with the hot weather but now we are getting cool weather for a week and the veggies will not like it...but my peas, radish, lettuce are up and many other veggies are up...I am excited to see your veg garden!!

    1. I can't wait until it's done - we're still working on it! I really want to get carrots in. I have another small raised bed for onions and snow peas planted, and they're coming up.

  10. Wow, you do have a lot of seedlings! This year I started exactly 4 watermelon seedlings. Now I'm looking for someone to give the rest of the seed packet too. My husband is allergic to melons, so we don't really need a lot! Hooray for green growing things in abundance!

    1. My kids started some watermelon in their little veggie gardens. I'm not sure if they are going to have room for them all, they started so many things in a rather small space :) It will be fun, though!

  11. Indie!! What energy you have! I used to do plants from seed but now it's just so much easier to go buy already grown plants. I do admire gardeners like you - it will be interesting just how much tomato sauce you are prepared to make in the fall :)

    1. I need something growing this past winter, especially since I'm not used to such a cold, long, snowy winter anymore! It was so nice to go and commune with all my little sproutlings when we were getting yet another snow storm! I must admit, though, after caring for all these now big seedlings, I'm getting a little worn out!

  12. Wow, that’s really impressive! I had some seedlings in my spare bedroom too, but without grow lights they didn’t like it that well so they actually died. I have made an order for starter plants instead – much easier since I only need a few anyway :-)
