In the Last Year

I hope everyone has been having a wonderful holiday!  I've been away from my computer the last two weeks.   One week was visiting family and having Christmas fun, the other week sick in bed and not so fun.  I am glad to be up and about finally, and, despite no snowy white Christmas, I am enjoying seeing the sun shining outside.

Looking back over the last year, I am impressed at how much we've done and how much the garden has changed.  This was our first full year at our new house, and we've worked to make it ours and make it a home.

In the front I planted a mailbox garden,

sowed lots of flower seeds,

Nicotiana
and enjoyed seeing seeing the growth of some of the plants we had put in last year.

Hibiscus 'Cranberry Crush'
The biggest changes, however, have been made to our back yard.  It was completely empty until...

we built a veggie garden,

we built a low retaining wall next to the house, making our future shade garden,

and, in what is probably the most exciting thing to happen to the Red House Garden ever, we got a greenhouse.

Whew!  I'm tired just thinking about all we've done this year and am almost glad for a winter break (though I know by the end of February I'm sure I'll be thinking an entirely different thing).  How about you guys?  Has your garden changed a lot this past year?

I wish you all a happy and healthy New Year, wherever you may be!

May love and laughter light your days,
and warm your heart and home.
May good and faithful friends be yours,
wherever you may roam.
May peace and plenty bless your world
with joy that long endures.
May all life's passing seasons
bring the best to you and yours!
~old Irish blessing

    1. We still have a few tomatoes growing in there! We're getting a round of very low temperatures, though, so we're probably going to not put in the effort to heat the greenhouse for a few weeks until I start seeds at the end of next month. Then the fun begins! I hope you have a wonderful New Year, as well!

  4. Such fun to look back at all these lovely blooms on a cold winter's day; love the butterflies on the coneflowers! You really did accomplish so much in the past year; looking forward to all the changes you make in 2015. Like you, I am enjoying the winter break, though I suspect we'll all be antsy to get back into the garden by February. Wishing you all the best in the New Year!

  8. Hi Indie. I'm also impressed by how much you've done in one year. Time flies by so quickly. Our winter has been very mild so far. So I keep gardening every weekend but a winter break would also be nice. I wish you and yours a Happy healthy 2015 with many flowers and butterflies.

    1. Thank you! I'm slowly getting better, thankfully - now it's turned into a lingering cold. I'm staying inside with a handful of seed catalogues :)

  10. So exciting having a new garden to play with, I'm two years in to my adventure, I love being able to try new things, and learning about the new conditions. Your greenhouse is a very exciting addition, I look forward to seeing what you grow in it. That shade garden looks intriguing too...

    1. Next month I'll be starting seeds in the greenhouse. That will nice, so my guest room won't be overrun with plants :) I'm still learning about how to use it to its full potential. Have fun with your new garden!

  11. It is good to look back on what we've achieved in the past year. I sometimes can only see what I haven't got round to doing (a list eight times longer than the achievements list). I look forward to watching what happens in your garden. Happy new year!

    1. I'm a rather impatient gardener, so it is very good for me to look back and realize that, yes, a lot was accomplished! :) I, too, sometimes just see how very many things I'd love to get done that there just isn't enough time and resources for!
