Our New Red Veggie Garden!

After several weeks of digging, stone excavating, building, and painting, our veggie garden is finally ready for the big reveal:

Ta da!
Our veggie garden fence is finally done!

our (hopefully!) critter-proof veggie garden fence!
Knowing that we have rabbits, groundhogs, and deer in the area to fend off, we did our best to make our garden safe for the veggie plants.

Veggies tasty for the critters are on the inside of the fence.
On the outside are plants usually avoided, such as rhubarb and ground cherries
The bottom part has 1/2" wire mesh to keep out the smaller critters.  We dug trenches and buried the mesh a foot down to hopefully deter the tunneling groundhogs (or, as we call them, R.O.U.S.'s).

Larger-holed mesh covers the middle chunk, and wire is strung near the top to hopefully prevent the deer from thinking this was a free, all-you-can-eat salad buffet.

I have to give major props to the fabulous Mr. Red House, who designed and built this gorgeous arbor and gate for me!

Within, the garden holds pretty much all the components of several types of salsa, as well as a mean salad or two.  Having quite the plethora of stones after digging up the ground for the garden, the veggie beds are lined with (can you guess?) rocks.

Our veggie garden only contains organic, hand-dug, native rocks.
'Cause that's the way we roll...
There is still a little more stone-moving and filling up of ditches to be done, but I'm so happy that the garden is pretty much done and the veggies are in the ground!

Happy gardening!

  2. Aha! the red has returned...YAY!
Looking forward to great things in your critter-free zone. Is it squirrel proof too...they may have followed you in the move! :-)

    1. Sadly not squirrel proof, though I doubt that they will be too interested in it - they are too busy around the bird feeders. Now I even have TWO different gangs of squirrels AND chipmunks. It could be an all-out turf war...

  3. I like it! Wow, that's a lot of rocks! I sort of wish I could find that many in my yard ... but then again, maybe not. ;-) I'm so excited to hear you're growing Ground Cherries! We have them up at our cottage where they grow wild. I enjoyed picking a few when they were ripe and trying them for the first time last summer. Happy Gardening!

    1. I tried them for the first time last summer as well at a local community farm. The kids liked them as well, so I thought they would be fun to plant! If they grown well, I'll try baking some things with them and see how they turn out. :)

  4. Looks terrific! And...those are some beautiful forests in the background to offset that nice shade of red.

    1. We have some woods around in our yard, which we love. The trees do shade the back part of the veggie garden somewhat, but we can't bring ourselves to cut down any of the beautifully tall trees!

  5. Fabulous! What a lot of work that must have been. But what great results!

    1. Thank you! It was a lot of work, and I'm glad it's done, but it was well worth it!

  6. I love it! And the birds will be accustomed to the red color, so they will not find your ripening tomatoes an attraction. Mr. Redhouse is fabulous indeed! (Isn't this the guy who is also hopelessly romantic about special occasions, or am I getting him mixed up with another blogger's hubby?) At any rate, he deserves lots of hugs and kisses!

  8. That turned out beautifully, I love the pop of red. Also, the wire fence to keep out the moochers. Your husband is surely one to hang onto.

    1. I am :) Mr. Red House is actually the driving force behind all the red, since it's one of his favorite colors, so it's nice that it's something we both love!

  13. Wow! Nicest veggie garden ever, Indie! I love that you still call the blog Red House Garden and now you have a red fenced-in veg garden too. Enjoy all those delicious home-grown vegetables.

    1. We still miss our red house! Oh well, we are working on making this house our own - and now we have an awesome red veggie garden. I can't wait for veggies!

  14. Looks fabulous! It sure looks critter proof, time will tell I guess. The squirrels are not very interested in my salads, radish and chillies, they would much rather eat rose and camellia shoots! Maybe they taste better to a squirrel?

    1. So far the squirrels have been hanging out near my bird feeders, so that seems to be distracting them. As for the other critters, like you said, time will tell!

  15. Mr. Red House did a fine, bang-up job on the critter-proof fence. I note that he has painted the fence red in honor of your blog name. As for the native, organic, hand-dug rocks ... tsk tsk, you KNOW I suffer from rock envy.

    1. Mr. Red House loves red (it was his idea to paint the original house red), so it was no hard task to convince him that the fence should be red as well. As for the rocks, if you ever want to take a road trip and dig out a few, just let me know... until then, I hope you are watering all those rock seeds really well ;)

  16. Oh, way to go! I'll bet it feels great to get that one checked off! May all the critters stay far far away. :)
